Approx Word Count: 36,231 words

I wrote four new short stories: Golden Age of the Squash People, Shiny Black Hearts, Dead Sharp Tail, Collecting the Dead; and four new flash stories: The Man who Climbed out of a Suitcase, The Man who wasn't a Man at all, The Man in the Men's Room, The Men in the No Club. And that concludes January.

Murky Tainted Hill
First off, I read Gunpowder by Joe Hill. A dark sci-fi novella in which Hill introduces us to a group of children genetically engineered to terraform a planet with their special skills. The characterisation is outstanding (who couldn't love Charley, and Jake, and Niles etc). The plot builds steadily, growing darker with each breath. The conclusion is satisfying and lingers with you for days. For a more indepth, infinitely better review head over to The Fix. Oh, and it's selling out fast. The signed copies (drat, I was too slow) sold out before publication and I doubt the trade edition will be in stock much longer as it is limited to 500 copies.
Next up was issue 1 of Murky Depths. They are currently up to issue 7 (my copy arrived today, but as I''m yet to read number 6 it will have to wait awhile), and I received a copy of issue 1 free when I signed up for a subscription. It's a beautifully produced magazine with a mixture of comic strips and short stories, and there's not a dud in the whole magazine. My favourite stories were Looking In, Looking Out by Gareth D Jones - I defy anyone not to feel at least a twinge of sadness at the end - and CyberRevenge Inc. by Eugie Foster (which left me with the sweats as I'm convinced the story I currently have subbed with Murky Depths, 'PlasticineCoffins.com', is too similar, although it has nothing to do with revenge and Foster's story had no plasticine people in it - sigh).
Finally, I read Tainted, an anthology edited by Aaron Polson. It's always a little harder plugging a book/story/magazine by someone you know. It feels tainted (no pun intended), but I couldn't let this little gem gather dust on my shelf without mentioning it at least once. My favourite story was Fish Balls and Mushrooms by Natalie L Sin - and again, as I know and admire Natalie it feels a bit like - well of course she would say that, but bare in mind I also have a blog acquaintance with several others on the TOC and although I enjoyed their stories they didn't make number one - sticks tongue out and runs away. The stories in Tainted where inspired by stories from Poe, Blackwood, Bierce, Wells and Benson. Of the old masters, my favourite story was E.F. Benson's The Caterpillars.

BOOM!
My television blew up just as Lost and Supernatural were premiering their new series, and tonight is episode five of 24.
It smelled a little like rubber burning and first off I blamed my hairdryer (oh, I wish), then the washing machine (who needs clean clothes), and then to my horror I saw that the television had switched itself off and was looking a blacker shade of grey. We've only had it 2 and a bit years, and the one before that blew up. Maybe I've watched too many episodes of Buffy on DVD and something has escaped. If I find the gremlin, I'll let you know.

A Curious Coincidence
Words completed for the rewrite of Last Seen Drowning - 1176 words
Words completed for the 2nd draft of Theatre of Curious Acts - 1176 words
And it wasn't purposeful at all.
Number of rice krispies in the Rice Krispie cakes I made earlier - 1176
Okay, that last one is a lie. Though the cakes are real. :) They're splattered all over plates in the kitchen (I forgot to buy cake cases - doh!)

Willpower, Mermen and Vikings
Dead Sharp Bait was rejected by the Dead Bait anthology today (fabulous eight day response - I do love a quick turnaround), and I've now signed my zombie mermen up for another rejection in about 72 hours - I've sent it to Clarkesworld.
My abstinence from writing short stories only lasted a week. Though that's possibly a record.

I am trying to write my novel... Honest
PRESS RELEASE
Apex Magazine is delighted to announce that the April issue will be a special one devoted to the concept of how the future will remember the past, and edited by award-winning writer and Apex author Michael A. Burstein.
“Ever since we published Michael’s collection I Remember the Future, we’ve been hoping that Michael could find the time to edit an issue,” said Jason Sizemore, publisher and editor-in-chief of Apex Magazine. “Michael’s looking for stories that evoke the same themes that tie his own stories together, such as the slipperiness of history and the dangers of forgetting the past.”
Burstein will be reading for this special issue of Apex Magazine from January 15th until March 15th. He said, “I want to thank Apex for this opportunity to edit an issue of the magazine. I’m looking forward to seeing the stories come in, and I’m hoping for some powerful ones that will stay with me for a long time.”
More details can be found on the Apex Magazine webpage.

Insert Evil Laugh
Flash Scribe has accepted 'The Man who Climbed out of a Suitcase' and 'The Man who Wasn't a Man at all'. You can probably guess from the titles that the stories are connected to each other. I was having so much fun writing them, I could have gone on writing and writing little stories set in the same universe, but I stopped myself and waited to see if the first two stories were accepted.
Did you believe me when I said I wasn't going to write anymore shorts this month? ::Insert Evil Laugh Here:: Fools!

You know that little Snoopy smilie that does a happy dance? Well imagine it dancing here. The Scratch of an Old Record has just been accepted by the fantastic folk at Necrotic Tissue for their first print issue, due July 2009. Yep, that's right, first print issue.
Issue 6 (due April) will mark the end of the pdf version and the beginning of a fabulous new era. Subscriptions will be available from March.

Fixing the Daft Draft
George gasped as he looked into the lake's still waters.
That's nice, but where did the lake come from? One minute the cast are collected on a path and a new character has arrived, and the next, a b****y big lake has appeared right in front or beside or behind them... No wonder George gasped. No introduction. It's just there. I wouldn't mind but George was picking baby teeth* out of his boots a moment ago.
I'm so lucky no one fell in.
Oh the joys of tearing apart a NaNoWriMo draft.
*No babies were harmed in the making of this draft, their teeth fell out due to natural causes.

BlogEnvy
I've broken my 'write one short story a month in 2009' rule and my wrists have been duly slapped. I've submitted Shiny Black Hearts to 'Weird Tales' and Dead Sharp Tail to the 'Dead Bait' anthology. I was working on something for 'Space Cops', but it began wandering further and further away from the guidelines so I've put it aside and declared I'm not going to write another short story during January. We'll see how long that lasts.
And Google fact of the day - someone found my blogspot blog by typing 'i hate cate .com'. I'm assuming they mean Miss. Blanchett and not me. Gulp!

Phew!

The folks at Sand: A Journal of Strange Tales have accepted my story 'Sneakers on Asphalt' for issue 4 due out in May 2009. I can now cease having panic attacks that I'll never get another acceptance - well for a week at least.
*Picture to the left is of their 2008 anthology, which includes my story 'Through the Warped Eye of Death'.

No Thermometer Required
*Being on the list of favourites is not a good thing - they never sell. In my opinion the best stories I wrote last year were Frog & the Mail Order Bride, Treading the Regolith, Manipulating Paper Birds, Chasing Alice out of Wonderland and Strange Tooth, and they're all stuck in submission land. While some I was a little unsure of sold right away. Moral of the day: Don't trust you're own judgement.

Cryptic Clues
And there are two old men in the chapter. God bless NaNoWriMo. I wonder how many more notes I left for myself. I'm almost a third of the way through and trying not to rush the process. I mean, the synopsis can wait. Gulp. I have an idea where I want to send it when I'm done, but I don't know if I'm brave enough.

Tag, You're It
Share seven facts about yourself in the post. Tag seven people at the end of your post by leaving their names and the links to their blogs.
1. When I was 9, a baby tooth fell out during school and clumsy me managed to lose it in the grass on the way home. I searched and searched that grass and was distraught as I thought the 'tooth fairy' wouldn't leave me any money. May I repeat - I was 9!!!
2. My bike when I was little (yeah, I had it when I was nine) was bright yellow and it made the loudest squeaking noise. People would hear me coming even when I was streets away - which is probably a good thing as I never rode in a straight line and if you took the stabilisers off the bike, I fell off.
3. When I first left college I worked in a betting shop and one bright sunny day a not so nice man walked in with a knife and held it to my throat demanding my boss give him the money from the cash register. The mad woman threw the till drawer at him.
4. I used to have acting lessons with a guy who was an extra in a very old episode of Doctor Who.
5. We don't play 'Dodge Ball' in UK schools but if we did I would have been very good at it. I spent most of my gym lessons trying to dodge the ball (those rounders balls were skull-breaking hard) and was always last to be picked for the team.
6. I don't have a degree. I was always in the top class for maths but struggled with English, so I guess I should be an accountant ::shiver:: and not a writer.
7. I wasn't a very intelligent child. When the weatherman reported there would be rain on the hills I thought he meant on the little mounds of grass in our local swing park. Duh!
Now I'm thinking the above is more who I was not who I am, but it's all you're getting.
I tag:

Justin Pilon

Leaving a Dent in the Sofa
I'm relieved the holidays are over. I loved the break. I loved lounging around watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer on DVD and watching old episodes of The Outer Limits on cable, but it's also good to be back at the computer. I'm hard at work (ahem! well almost) working on the second draft of 'Theatre of Curious Acts' and I am about to move onto part two: Paper Dragons. At the moment I'm averaging about 1,400 words a day - I think that's respectable.
I hope to add about 7,000 words by week-end to Theatre and I also want to write a dark short story so that I can submit to 'Necrotic Tissue' this month. I know I said I'd only do one short story a month, but I figure as long as I'm working on the long stuff and doing a resonable amount of wordage that I can play with the shorts too. Got to keep the writer happy.

Two Days In
I added Aaron Polson's 'Reciprocity' to the Sci-Fi/Fantasy nominations (apparently it will take an hour or so to appear on the nomination list) - if you loved the story as much as I did then go vote for him. Actually, go vote for him anyway because if he comes in last he might kill me. :)
I'm still convinced 2009 is going to be a scary year. January 1st hated me. My printer refused to print out 'Cyclone of Painted Shells' so that I could send it out to Fantasy & Science Fiction - I won in the end. :) Then when I went searching for an envelope for an SAE, one of the knobs on my storage drawers fell off and while I'm trying to reattach it (mumbling that 2009 hated me), the entire front of the drawer fell off. Then I was making a stupendous roast dinner and my Mum rushes in from the garden to say a helicopter looked as if it was out of control and it was above our house. When I got outside it was gone - but hey, I believe it was there.
Wrote my first short story of the year today - Golden Age of the Pumpkin Heads - and kind of got submission happy and sent it out already. I really do need to learn a little Stephen-King-patience.

Stepping Wearily into 2009
Happy New Year everyone!
I'm a girl who believes in Karma and signs and portents and OMG! my new year got off to a bad start so I may make a hearty meal for a whole continent of zombies by the time the day ends as I delve into the world of comfort eating. Note to self: Do not open your emails on Jan 1st until something blindingly-brilliant has happened.
First email (okay, after several spam) was a rejection - BOO! So my stats for this year so far are:
Submissions: 0
Sales: 0
Rejections: 1
Publications: 0 (sob! - more on that)
Approx Word Count: 0
Stories out in submission land: 23
WIP: Theatre of Curious Acts 2nd draft - 10,921
Subscriptions: 2 (Postscripts, Doorways)
New Subscriptions: 0
Then with my following email, I followed the link to the latest issue of Necrotic Tissue which should have included my 100 worder Bug Eyed. It wasn't there. Ate some more chocolate, checked acceptance email (it says January 09), breathed sigh of relief that I hadn't imagined an acceptance, settled down to wait for the next issue in April.
Not a good start guys, right??? Gulp.
Anyhow, I guess we need to do the whole resolution/goal thing.
1. Write one short story a month - totalling 12 for the year (I can count).
2. Finish 'Theatre of Curious Acts' and sub etc
3. Rework 'The Poisoned Apple' and sub etc
4. Write new novel either 'The Moth Maker' or 'The new idea I had at work on Tuesday when I was supposed to be coming up with an idea for a short story - and then convinced myself I was a genius and this would be the one (again)'.
5. Take out a new subscription / buy a new anthology / novel from a small press publisher every month. And for those of you not in the know 'Necrotic Tissue' is going to be a print magazine as of July and they now pay pro rate to one writer per issue ($25 dollars for other short stories, and 5 cents per word for the 100 worders - which is pretty cool too). I will be abusing their inbox again.
And to compound my 'this new year is evil' mantra - I'm now off to do my writerly tax returns for 2008.
