Leisure Books, a leading publisher of paperback horror, is partnering with Rue Morgue magazine in association with horror fiction web site ChiZine, to present “Fresh Blood,” a new writing contest specifically for unpublished horror authors. The winner will receive a contract for publication in Leisure’s 2011 lineup, as well as a contract from ChiZine Publications for a limited-edition hardcover release, also in 2011.
Leisure is looking for finished horror novel manuscripts, either supernatural or non-supernatural, of 80,000 – 90,000 words. A panel of experts, including Leisure Executive Editor Don D’Auria and editors at ChiZine, will judge entries. The finalists will be announced in November 2009.
From December through July 2010, monthly competitions in categories such as “Best Summary,” “Best First Line,” “Best Title,” and “Most Frightening Scene” will run on the ChiZine.com. Readers will have the opportunity to vote for their favorites, and after each deadline, entries with the fewest votes will be eliminated.
The winner will be announced in August 2010 at Rue Morgue’s Festival of Fear in Toronto, Canada, as well as on the Leisure Books and ChiZine web sites.
Entries should be sent to Submissions by September 30, 2009. “Fresh Blood” must appear in the subject line of the email. For full entry details, visit: Dorchester or ChiZine.
Might be just the incentive I need to fix up one of my old manuscripts - then again, I do have my lazy head on at the moment.

That's exciting : )
Some Fresh incentive to the horror writers out there.
Oooh that DOES look exciting. Of course I'd probably never be able to convince myself to do it, out of sheer lameness, but I shall watch with interest!
A nice little contest, yes.
Oh, cool! Now if only I wrote horror.
You definitely need to enter.
Go on, fix it up and get it off :)
Do it, do it!
Pish. You with your lazy head probably still produces more words in a month than I do in a year. Do it!!!
oh cool. now only if i had a novel here somewhere, say in a nook or cranny. a novel that appeared by magic somewhere in the house! though the novel would probably come with a horrible price, and i'd end up without legs or with gills or you know, dead.
oops i got distracted by the magic
I'm probably not going to enter but I'd love it if someone I knew did and then I could vote, vote, vote.
With the amount of time remaining to come up with a finished manuscript, I'd probably be better of waiting for NaNoWriMo to roll around again. :)
