A Hole in One (groan!)

Here's an unusual new magazine for you. Erik Smetana is putting together a magazine with the excellent title, Stymie.

Now don't let the golf theme put you off, in fact let it inspire you. Here are the fiction guidelines:

We want fiction, we crave it. We want mystery, lit fic, noir, humor, spec fic, whatever -- just so long as it (your submission) somehow involves golf. We have a penchant for flash fiction and would prefer nothing over 3000 words.

You can read an interview with Erik over at A J Brown's blog.

Oh, and talking of things golf related, and to get you in the golfing mood (I think someone mixed lawn feed with my morning cereal,) check out Back Spin by the fantabulous Harlan Coben. Despite being a horror writer, my favourite author writes thrillers. I'm sure there's a rule against that somewhere, but rules were made to broken.

Oh, and as a side note: Erik designed the above 'The Poisoned Apple' banner... The one I had before was, well... Crap!

I found myself oddly interested in subbing something to Stymie. I wrote 1700 words on it this morning. Love the set up and the "moment of wtf" but have no idea where to go for now.

Thanks for the heads up on this!

Cate,

Thanks so much for posting this. I and the rest of the Stymie team really appreciate it.

You Rock!

WOW Barry, you're putting me to shame. Good luck with your story.

Anytime, Erik.

FYI --

We have contributions from two VERY WELL KNOWN AUTHORS (one excerpt and one short story) who have written novels with golf mixed in in the past. One of which will also be interviewed for the issue (the author has a new novel coming out the same month).

We have a handful of poems that we are looking at putting in but we still want some original short fiction. So please send it if you got it.

Eek! How's that for pressure. I need to get working on something.

I like thrillers and crime fiction.

Keep breaking those rules!

I LOVE Harlan Coben, and this sounds like a great idea for people who love golf. But as for me -- crap at all sports -- I can't help but remember that quote -- was it Mark Twain? -- about golf being a good walk spoiled.

My brothers-in-law are fantastic golfers. They've won all sorts of trophies and prizes. You should hear them getting together and swapping golf stories. I certainly have.
