Feed your Head

Laura Anderson has tagged me to do the following meme.

Find a song that sums up what you think it means to be a writer and post the lyrics on your blog and why you've chosen it.

NB: It doesn't have to be your favourite song, it just has to express how you feel about writing and/or being a writer. It can be literal, metaphorical, about a particular form or aspect of writing - whatever you want. Then tag 5 others to do the same (reprint these instructions).

I knew immediately which song to choose: White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane

One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall

And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall
Tell 'em a hookah smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call
Recall Alice
When she was just small

When men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving slow
Go ask Alice
I think she'll know

When logic and proportion
Have fallen sloppy dead
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's "off with her head!"
Remember what the dormouse said;
"FEED YOUR HEAD

Okay, so why the above:

Let's take the first verse:

One pill makes you larger (Yay! I got an acceptance)
And one pill makes you small (Boo! I got a rejection)
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all (Well my Mum loves everything...
Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall ...and if I listened to her my head would grow to such proportions I'd do serious damage to myself)

Then we have the last words:

Remember what the dormouse said;
"FEED YOUR HEAD (Enough said)

On the whole I like to listen to this song when I want to get into a surreal frame of mind.

Here's the video:

And who do I tag? Well, anyone who wants to play along, that's who.

How interesting...I don't know if I can think of a song, but if I do, I will try this meme...

As this is the song I usually play for inspiration, I kind of cheated.

I'm not sure if I know any songs that refer to writing. I'll have to think about it.

But White Rabbit, yes, good choice.

Yep, bit of a toughie this meme.

Heh, I love your interpretation of the first verse. I might have a go at this.

Yeah! Jefferson Airplane!

Um, the last two posts...am I sensing a them?

I'll go ask Alice.

As someone who believes firmly that there is a song for everything (I make character playlists-- it's a sickness), I absolutely love this idea. And your fabulous interpretation!

Thanks for playing, KC.

Cheers, Michael. I didn't tag anyone in particular as I thought if I started tagging people again, they might kill me.

Aaron - Definitely! Though coincidence rather than intentional.

Katey - Ooh, character playlists. I've never tried that. Interesting idea.

oooh, great song! This is one of the classics that no one ever really thinks about, you know?

You'd love it! I have a bunch of CD's in my car that just have names on them. My husband will often say, "Oh, let's listen to Gianni..."
